Fresh New Pattern: The Highligter Affair

Announcing my newest slouchy hat pattern: The Highlighter Affair!
To celebrate I'm making it 20% off in my Ravelry store until 11:59 PM CST on 5/24/16 (no coupon needed.)

The Highlighter Affair is a slouchy hat knit in 2 colors of fingering weight yarn. It uses the butterfly stitch as well as wrap & turns to create a fun texture with color pops. There are only a couple of purl rows on the brim and the rest is all knits and slipped stitches so it’s a much easier hat to make than it appears.

This is a great stash-buster for those little leftover bits of sock yarn, too! ftmhling made a super cute version with some odds and ends leftover from other projects. Forget making a sock-yarn blanket, knit up a quick sock-yarn hat instead.

Skill level:
intermediate - knit, purl, cast-on, bind-off, decreasing, knitting in the round, Directions are given for the Butterfly Stitch and Wrap & Turns.

A Note On Gauge:
The given gauge is pretty loose for stockinette, this is intentional because of the fabric needed for the Butterfly Stitch. If done at a tighter gauge the fabric can become too tight and doesn’t drape well in the finished hat.

Yarns:
The yarn pictured in the pattern is Madeline Tosh Merino Light in the Edison Bulb and Holi Festival colorways. Hedgehog Fibers Sock and Claudia Hand Painted Addicted are other favorites of mine that look amazing in this pattern. (I’ll be adding the pictures of samples in these yarns soon.)

Yardage:
You will need between 75 and 200 yards of each color. (Total yardage is between 150 and 400 yards.)

Have a great week of crafting, everyone!

Pattern Re-Release: The Busy Bee Throw

Sorry that this is a super late posting this week, but it's been a bit crazy around here lately...

This week I'm announcing the re-release of my first published pattern: The Busy Bee Throw! To celebrate, I'm offering a 20% discount on it in my Ravelry store until 11:59 PM CST on May 18, 2016. (No coupon needed.)

This is a great pattern for those of you new to crochet (or for those of you who want to be new to crochet) because it uses very simple stitches and you are only ever working on a small piece of fabric until the very end when you seam the whole thing together. This technique also makes this a great travel project because the hexagon pattern is very easy to memorize so all you need is 1 ball of yarn, and your crochet hook tucked into your bag.

Originally published last Spring in Knitpicks' pattern collection: The Well Made Home: Crochet the Busy Bee Throw has been made in quite a few beautiful color combinations over the past year:

My friend, Peggy, had originally intended to use this collection of City Tweed DK for a Granny Square Afghan but thought that the hexagons would be a more fun use of these lovely colors.

Gamegirljill made this adorable girly version out of Knitpicks Brava. She also made it large enough to cover her twin-size bed as a comforter.

I just love the color pops on Vestigialwords' Busy Bee Throw! Who would have thought that just swapping in that brown would make such a big difference?

I'm so looking forward to all the new combinations that everyone comes up with so please tag me if you're making a Busy Bee Throw of your own and post pictures.
Grab your copy while it's on sale and pick up some new spring-y colors of yarn or use this to do some stash busting! Have a great week of crafting, everyone!

May Classes for Kids!

Hey, guys!! This week I wanted to let you all know that I'm going to be offering classes for both adults and kids in the Sioux Falls, SD area. Right now a lot of the classes are being offered at our local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft store, but I'm also putting together some offerings at Hobby Lobby and at Athena Fibers. I'm also happy to teach individual lessons so just send me an e-mail if you are interested in some one-on-one instruction.

Most of my classes for the month of May are posted under the "Classes and Events" tab on my website, but there are still a few at the end of the month that I would like to schedule in if I can get all the pieces to fit together. Here is a sneak peek at a few of the super fun kids classes that I'll be teaching. (As of this posting, they are all on sale for 40% off!)
